Thursday's session was a study in how misleading a headline index number can be.
The Sensex finished up 373.76 points, or 0.48%, at 78,954.76. The Nifty 50 closed at 24,636 — a gain of 11.35 points, or 0.05%. Round that and the Nifty didn't move at all. Read only the Sensex and you'd think it was a decent green day. Both statements describe the same six hours.
Where the actual money went
Underneath the flat top line, two pockets did real work.
PSU banks were the standout: the Nifty PSU Bank index gained 2.21%, comfortably outpacing the broader Nifty Bank index at 0.56%. State Bank of India rose 3.22% ahead of its June-quarter results, due Friday. Analyst previews heading into that print have flagged the possibility of profit falling in the 6-10% range with net interest margins recovering only marginally — so the pre-results move is investors positioning ahead of a number, not reacting to one. Worth remembering when Friday's headline lands.
Defence was the other engine. HAL, MIDHANI, Bharat Dynamics and Mazagon Dock all rallied, with gains running as high as 6% across the pack, and BEL added over 2%. The sector has been on a run — defence stocks added roughly ₹2.5 trillion in market capitalisation over the June quarter.
Index heavyweight Reliance Industries climbed 3.52%, which alone accounts for a meaningful chunk of the Sensex's advance. Power Grid was the notable drag, down about 4%.
The commodities story was louder than equities
Gold hit a seven-week high, extending gains into a fourth straight session. Spot gold was up 0.6% at $4,271.33 an ounce; domestic prices jumped ₹3,800 to ₹1.53 lakh per 10 grams in New Delhi. Silver added ₹2,100 to ₹2,34,800 per kg.
The trigger: hopes around a partial reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, which eased fears that a prolonged energy squeeze would keep inflation — and therefore rates — higher for longer. Brent crude climbed toward $81 a barrel in a choppy session as traders waited on a final Iran-Oman deal on shipping lanes. Iran has said the agreement is in its final stages while insisting the US isn't party to it, and has tied full normalisation to the lifting of an American blockade on its ports. That last detail is why oil is still choppy rather than collapsing.
Results and flows
LIC reported Q1 FY27 net profit up 23% at ₹13,492 crore. Roughly 140 companies reported on the day, including Hero MotoCorp and Trent. BSE, meanwhile, had already posted a 62% jump in Q1 net profit to ₹873 crore.
On flows, Wednesday's tape showed foreign institutional investors turning sellers to the tune of ₹943.42 crore while domestic institutions bought ₹2,883.17 crore — the same domestic-absorbs-foreign pattern that's been holding this market up for months.
India VIX ended at 12.15, up 0.8%.
The thing to actually watch
The Sensex-Nifty gap that's now run four sessions is a mechanism story, not a market story — it's a consequence of the new Closing Auction Session, and Thursday's weekly Sensex expiry made it wider than it needed to be. We've broken that down in full in today's deep dive. Tomorrow the attention shifts to SBI's numbers, where a 3% pre-results rally has set a bar that the actual print now has to clear.
